WellBeing At Work Partners with BPP to Bring Less Stress to the Workplace

Thursday 04 Oct 12

WellBeing At Work, the workplace platform established by WellBeing World, has teamed up with BPP, Jersey’s largest on-island tutor team, to create a one day Managing Stress in the Workplace seminar, appropriately called ‘Less Stress’.

According to the CIPD Absence Survey 2011, stress is the most common cause of long-term absence from work in the UK.  Over 10 million working days were lost in Britain in 2010/2011 due to work-related stress, costing the UK economy more than £26 billion.

In Jersey, 18,000 days were lost to illness in 2010, of which more than 40% were stress related; this costs Jersey businesses thousands of pounds every year in absence, staff turnover and lost productivity.

Add to this, the cost of presenteeism, where employees are at work but not productively engaged, together with direct health and compensation costs, and stress becomes an epidemic of serious proportions.

And yet, over half of small and medium sized businesses claim it is an issue in their workplace, and a quarter of small business owners do not feel confident that they would be able to recognise and address ill health, stress or depression among their employees.   In addition, 2 in 5 (41%) admit they never speak to their employees about their physical or mental health.

But local professional help is at hand.

WellBeing At Work, the workplace platform established by WellBeing World, has teamed up with BPP, Jersey’s largest on-island tutor team, to create a one day Managing Stress in the Workplace seminar, appropriately called ‘Less Stress’.

Not only will attendees go away with a clear understanding of what causes stress at work, how to recognise it, and how to deal with it, they will also receive valuable advice from a number of wellbeing professionals across the spectrum from nutrition and office ergonomics to mental and physical health, with practical solutions to immediately apply back in the workplace.  This is the first time a Stress Management course has been delivered in this way in the Channel Islands.

Attendees will also gain access to the WellBeing At Work Audit and an optional Mindfulness in the Workplace Meditation, now so popular with many successful organisations for reducing stress and enhancing productivity.

Lincoln Miles, MD at BPP Jersey said: “Stress is a major threat to business, but it needn't be. By recognising the symptoms early and working with your employees to overcome any issues, you can help reduce the impact that stress related absence has on your business.  We are delighted to be working with WellBeing At Work to bring a new dimension to this essential business skills training course.”

Beverley Le Cuirot, Founder of WellBeing At Work added: “As in the UK, the cost of stress to Channel Islands businesses is huge, however with greater awareness and mental health support it is estimated that these statistics could be reduced by as much as one third.”

She added: “And costs aside, caring for employee wellbeing is a sign of a good employer.  Stress management, and health and wellbeing programmes are proving effective in helping businesses gain the buy-in of their employees and to build resilience.”

The seminar will be held in recognition of National Stress Awareness Day on Wednesday, 7th November at the Royal Yacht Hotel.  Individual tickets are £125 each, or book 4 tickets and get the 5th ticket free (and pay the equivalent of £100 per ticket).  CPD = 5.5 hours.
